Typically, when living in an older house the areas at the edge of your roof are fixed with a mixture of sand, cement and mortar. This is in order to prevent any unwanted pests such as birds or bees/wasps nesting in the roof. Roofs that are rendered with this mixture (sand, cement and mortar) are known as a ‘wet verge’. Although this solution does its job at keeping pests and water ingress out, the real issue is with its durability. Over years this outdated method will endure natural deterioration due to weathering and the natural movement of the building structure. When this happens the mortar can become dislodged or begin to crack which can lead to problems that it is meant to prevent. Therefore, we propose a more efficient method at securing the verge of a roof, which is known as ‘Dry Verge’. Dry verge is a piece of plastic that is fitted where the tiles of a roof at the open edge on the side of a roof slope. This is also a similar method as the dry ridge option for your ridge tiles ‘Dry Fixing’ which is an increasingly popular roofing option which allows for the weather and pest-proofing of your roof without the need for the old fashioned sand, cement and mortar technique.
Dry Ridge Systems
Dry Ridge system is a modern method of fixing ridge tiles to a roof without the use of traditional sand, cement and water, consistent with the Dry Verge system. Dry ridge, rather than relying on mortar for a bond (wet ridge system), instead uses a dry fix system that typically screws directly into the rafters of the roof. This allows the roof to move and flex without causing any problems. Another advantage of the Dry Ridge system is that beneath the screws are waterproof unions that take care of any small amounts of rainfall that may get through which increases the durability of this method. We offer this leading service as we believe this is the most cost effective way of repair and can also with stand through extreme weather conditions.
The benefits of a Dry Verge/Ridge System
Maintenance – Unlike mortar there is nothing to maintain, a dry verge/ridge system effectively leaves you maintenance free.
Ventilation – Dry verge provides discrete ventilation of the roof space and helps to stop any unnecessary build up of condensation.
